Legal fraternity to observe black day today

LAHORE/PESHAWAR/ KARACHI: The legal fraternity will observe ‘black day’ today (Tuesday) to commemorate the day superior courts judges were sacked in 2007 through the imposition of emergency and promulgation of the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) by then president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf.

The newly elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Qazi Muhammad Anwar, gave the call for the black day. Bar councils and bar associations across the country will hold protest meetings and take out rallies to condemn the unconstitutional acts committed by Musharraf.

The Lahore High Court Bar Association will take out a rally from GPO Chowk to Charring Cross. Before the rally, the bar association will hold its general house meeting at 10:30am in Kiyani Hall. LHCBA President Nasira Iqbal will hold a press conference after the rally. The Peshawar High Court Bar Association (PHCBA) will also observe the day by holding its general body meeting and hoisting black flags on the high court building. However, they have decided not to boycott court proceedings. Lawyers at the Peshawar District Bar Association will halt court proceedings after 11am and attend the joint meeting of the PHCBA and the district bar.

Lawyers in Sindh have also announced to boycott court proceedings today to protest against Musharraf’s illegal actions. Addressing a press conference at the Sindh Bar Council (SBC), Vice-chairman Mehmoodul Hasan, Karachi Bar Association (KBA) President Muhammad Ali Abbasi and recently elected SCBA Executive Committee member Zia Awan said the day would be observed as black day to show that lawyers were ready to challenge any misadventure in the future. staff report
